Don’t ignore your glutes

Dead-butt syndrome sounds like a funny, made-up condition. It’s less funny if you happen to have it. Like I do. The only thing that makes me feel slightly better is that pro athletes get this, too.

At the beginning of August, I noticed a pain in my right hip that made it hard to walk long distances and made going up the stairs painful. Sleeping on my right side is akin to setting it on fire. My symptoms line up with gluteal tendinopathy, also known as dead butt syndrome. It’s a vexing condition because it can be caused by overuse or underuse and rest doesn’t help. It turns out that Sitting All Day Can Cause Dead Butt Syndrome, but I have been doing the opposite of sitting all day! What the Jack Daniels! So it’s a mystery, but here we are. I’ve been doing exercises for it, and they help. There are so many squats in my future.

I thought yoga might help and it does. This yoga workout for DBS was a good starting point:

10 Yoga Poses to Help Prevent Dead Butt Syndrome

The song playing on repeat in my head is Deadbeat Club by the B-52s with a slight word change: The B-52’s – Deadbeat Club.

Recruit your glutes, my friends! They don’t like to be neglected.
