Let’s stop fixating on our purpose
Not sure when the obsessive focus on purpose entered the chat, but maybe it’s time to cut its mic. Being purpose-driven sounds so good on the surface, but it’s run us ragged and left us exhausted.
It’s okay to just be.
You might like this piece by Kate Bowler, Feeling tired? Try giving up your “purpose.”
In it, she offers the observation that “Our hunger to find our purpose has left us purpose-weary.”
She continues: “Purpose-hunger promises us a life overflowing with meaning. But all too often, it delivers anxiety, self-doubt, and the nagging shame that we’re somehow failing to live our “Best Life Now.” When everything is supposed to matter, it starts to feel less like a mission and more like a burden we’re too tired to carry.”
Then watch her conversation with Liz Gilbert: Everything Happens LIVE with Kate Bowler and Elizabeth Gilbert. Be sure to at least watch until Gilbert talks about holding the ladder. And ask yourself, what was my ladder-holding moment? I love the movie It’s a Wonderful Life, because George Bailey does numerous things for other people without ever realizing the impact. Maybe your purpose is just to show up and hold the ladder, metaphorical or otherwise.
