Upcycling jeans and piecing a scrappy kaleidoscope
For the past month I’ve been working on a quilt that’s part upcycled jeans, part quilted hearts, part Sashiko. The hearts were pieced long ago and are waiting patiently to be paired with denim from the “jeans to upcycle” bin. I have no idea what I am doing so I stalled.
Now, I am pushing through the discomfort of not knowing and sewing without instructions.
This month, I also organized my beads. Mostly, I make earrings for my mom and beaded quilt hangers. But I decided to add some beads to the aforementioned 👖& ❤️ quilt.
When in doubt, make it a rainbow
I’m working on a rainbow strip quilt that uses mostly different fabrics: 560 of them! I have raided every scrap bin that I have. I was doing okay until I got to the purple squares, and then I came up short. A few of the awesome quilters from the online quitting community I’m a part of shared some purple fabrics. That got me most of the way there. Just need a few more strips!
Making friends with zippers
I also made a zippy bag from String and Story using leftover turquoise strips and some 10” squares that have been languishing in my precuts* drawer. It was also an opportunity to install another zipper. And added a handle. Go, me!

- 2 ½ inch strips: jelly rolls
- 5-inch squares: charm packs
- 2 ½ inch squares: mini charm packs
- 10-inch squares: layer cakes
- 18 x 21-inch pieces are called fat quarters. These can be sold individually or in collections
