NPR ran a story recently on an organization called Loose Ends. This volunteer-based organization finishes sewing and craft projects left behind after loved ones become too ill to complete projects or pass away. Handmade items–even partially finished ones are indelibly imbued with the essence of their creator. It feels impossible to let them go, even in their unfinished state. Volunteer finishers pick up where the original creator left off, adding a small decorative touch to indicate the point of handoff from the first artist to the finisher.
Loose Ends has 11,000 volunteers and counting! Amazing. I volunteered to finish quilt and sewing projects–I might need someone to do that for me someday.
Here’s a flyer to share with finishers you know and love–maybe that’s you!
