Pond update: it’s a dragonfly habitat

July 20th, 2008 · No Comments

The algae has retreated. I fished some out this morning and the haul was far less than it was a month ago. The plants look good for the most part. The canna looked a little cooked and one of the water celery plants looked sub-optimal but the flotilla of azolla is nothing short of amazing. When it first arrived, I felt silly for ordering thousands of these tiny plants. They all seemed to just wind up in the filter. And I thought I killed them because they turned a reddish brown color. Believe me, I did not kill them. They are doing quite well. Now with the water lilies as a barrier and longer roots, they provide excellent coverage.

The bag of barley pellets seemed to do something. The volume was significantly less so we refilled the bag.

I haven’t seen any snails in a while but now that the water is clearing a bit, who knows?

Anyone who knows me even in passing has probably observed that I have a thing for dragonflies. Well, my pond seems to be the ultimate dragonfly habitat. There are many dancing blue dragonflies around the pond at any given moment. Life is good.
