Friends and family have started to refer to events as “blog worthy.” So, as if on cue:

  • Brin has decided that she can fit her 60lb dog self into a cat bed made for a 10lb cat. Mind over matter, people, mind over matter.
  • I have a mystery plant growing in the back yard that I now believe to be the world’s largest dandelion. It produced a seed head larger than my fist. Not lyin’. Probably not a good thing.
  • IKEA now charges for plastic bags (5 cents) and I didn’t see a whole lot people handing over their money for said plastic bags when I went over the hill on Sunday. Good on ya, IKEA. Plastic bags blow as my friends at reusablebags.com would say.
  • I have water hyacinth in my pond now. I guess I need more plant materials to make my fish feel more secure and restore balance to my pond. If they grow well, I might also need a manatee. :-)
  • Darn good ending to Gilmore Girls. I am sorry to see it end but it went out in classic GG style.

Come on, get out of the box. I know you can.

My new compost bins from Steve’s Earth Engine are fully operational. Yep, got the double-wide. Well-made and ingeniously packaged. And now full to the brim.

I admit to rescuing some of my neighbor’s grass clippings from the curb on trash day. The clippings were in a clear bag, tempting this wannabe composter…what can I say? I needed more greens (grass) to go with browns (leaves). I dragged the bag home after a dog walk. Brin thought the grass monster was chasing us and attacked the bag.

I hope no one was filming…

The intricacies of human relationships never cease to amaze me. If you want to know what I mean, read Larry Flynt’s tribute to Jerry Falwell in the LA Times. No that is not a typo. Yes, *that* Larry Flynt.

A lesson that we don’t have to agree with one another to be human with one another.

A 5K, ladies and gentlemen. I don’t think I have ever used my name and 5K in the same sentence…until now. I did a 5K with my friend Jean: Moms on the Run, an annual event to raise funds for women in Northern Nevada battling cancer.

Jean is very persuasive. And we didn’t exactly run. We walked with purpose. :-)

I asked Jean to take my picture to prove I was there. I figured that someone would want evidence. ;-)

Millionsoulsaware.org is an online project. The goal: raise awareness of one million souls on important social issues. This non-profit project takes the unique approach of asking people to help raise awareness, not dollars: http://millionsoulsaware.org.

There was an article in the New York TimesFrom Brother’s Death, a Crusade” about Alison Malmon and her organization Active Minds. Active Minds raises awareness about mental illness on college campuses. For all our advances in understanding brain chemistry, brain disorders/injuries and mental illness carries a terrible social stigma–even though many Americans battle mental illness at some point in their lives (many in the form of depression or anxiety).
